When my husband and I purchased our house, we knew right away that we wanted to revamp the kitchen. It wasn’t long before we felt ready to take on this task (and all the dust and dirt that goes along with it). Everything was done with our own hands, along with some much-appreciated strength and knowledge from my father-in-law. This being a fully DIY attempt, we ran into many scenarios where the kitchen got “heated” with some problems. We didn’t purchase enough kitchen countertops but pivoted by wrapping a section of the previous countertop with con-tact paper, making that specific section a focus area on its own. We also learned (after finishing painting all the existing cupboard doors) that we should not have painted PVC directly onto enamel.
There was of course some additional back-and-forth to the shops when we didn’t buy enough product or forgot about something completely! We tried to repurpose much of the original kitchen content by moving cupboards around to fit our vision. We recently revamped one of the original kitchen cupboards and turned it into a linen storage space in our hallway.
Originally, we didn’t want to tile, but when we moved some of the cupboards around, we noted that the wall was looking like a very badly iced cake… We then decided it would be better to hide the past with some featured tiles. As we didn’t have too many cooks in our kitchen, my husband and I spent many nights painting and tiling into the early morning hours. It should be noted that we received no help from our cat, who leisurely curled up in the sun while we slaved away.
