The house was built in 1960, and the kitchen was typical of a home from that time. The last update for this kitchen happened in 1975, and it was small and impractical, with very little space for modern appliances. We wanted to open up the space to the rest of the house and turn the old kitchen into an eat-in kitchen, incorporating the dining room into the new kitchen.
The original structure included the small kitchen, a laundry room, a toilet and a stoep. We broke down all the interior walls and reclaimed the area for the eat-in kitchen. We wanted the kitchen to fit in with the rest of the house and went for a mid-century modern look. We also wanted to extend some of the original features from the house into the kitchen and installed slate floors that looked the same as the rest of the house.
It was essential for us to personalise the space to not only suit our needs but reflect our personalities. We also wanted a more informal space where we could enjoy entertaining friends and family. Ultimately, we turned a 12m2 kitchen into a 30m2 multi-use living space.
