We moved into my inlaws 84 year old house at the end of 2019 to be closer to the kids school. The house had a lot of character, but was dark and gloomy with a small kitchen. I’ve always dreamed of an in-outdoor kitchen area with a boma where my 4 boys can braai while mommy makes the side dishes! We had to break out three walls to create an open living space. The biggest challenge was that the asbestos ceiling throughout the house had to be removed before we could start any work. Luckely we got the bulk of the work done before lockdown. When my husband had to take a week’s forced leave during this time, it was a blessing in disguise. The kitchen was a labour of love and every piece of wood has a story to it. The kitchen tops were made from salvaged wood rooftrusses from a house that was renovated in our old neighbourhood. It’s always been a dream of us to use recycled wood even if it means more work. The house is still a work in progress and managing renovation inbetween work and schooling the kids is challenging, but we’re enjoying the journey!
