I saw this house on property24 for the first time and fell in love with the large fireplace, interior arches and many trees surrounding the property.
I immediately felt that this old lady had ‘solid bones’.
The layout of the house was good and I had to make minimum under-roof changes.
I extended the main bedroom by joining it with another room, creating a lovely open-plan bathroom/walk-in closet feeling. To make up for the one lost bedroom, I converted the second formal lounge into a third bedroom. The bathroom layouts were kept the same, just modernised with new tiles and fittings.
Wardrobes were replaced with new ones.
I replaced the kitchen completely and added a slider serving window that opens up to the braai courtyard. I kept all the old arches in the kitchen.
I kept all the original meranti windows and doors, sanded them down and revarnished them with a mixture of oak and white tint and matte marine sealer.
A small splash pool was added to the front part of the yard and the patio was extended so that the sunny side of the property was better used. The main bedroom is now spacious and overlooks the pool area, giving it that little bit of extra love. With the new raised deck area, we have lovely sea views! We added a large wall around the property for privacy, building closer to the house to keep all the original trees.
At the back, we transformed the old courtyard into a braai area with a large farm-style braai and fairy lights – it’s perfect for windy days, sheltered and overlooking the back garden.
