A few years ago (in 2014), we attended a log home building course in Wilderness with Roy Trembath. It was such an amazing experience that since then all we’ve wanted to do was someday build our own log home.
In 2020, we managed to secure the perfect piece of land in the Vredeford Dome World Heritage Site right next to the Vaal River, so we could make our dream a reality. We mainly used our weekends and days off to spend time on this dream. It was hard work, but we loved every moment of it. And whenever family and friends came to visit, their hands were itching to help out (it was a contagious project). We did notice, however, that more hands didn’t exactly equate to more work being done as it always ended early with a braai next to the river.
In total, we only spent about 40 full days on the project. The work was mostly done by my husband, myself and my father-in-law. We shopped around for materials, and with a lot of luck managed to build this 84sqm house on a limited budget.
