We purchased a square block that was used as an office in the Bo-Kaap in 2014. It’s a double-storey building and had no bedrooms or kitchen and a very rudimentary bathroom (a tiny basin, a toilet and just a shower head over nothing).
We ‘camped’ in the house for about eight months with two children and then started the big reno in 2015. We added a third floor, maximised views with large doors and windows, built bathrooms and bedrooms, and turned it from an office into a home. We ran out of money by 2016 and we have been slowly working on it now for the past eight years. It is still incomplete, and we hit a few snags along the way, but it is finally coming together. We bought it for the potential views and that is one of our most favourite things about this small home: the feeling of immense space. I also love its proximity to the city – just a five-minute walk down the road – and I love living in a community that is entirely different to the one I grew up in. There have been many builders and contractors over the years, but my father did the first big renovation.
