The project involved converting our original kitchen/office with an adjoining small bedroom into a more user-friendly kitchen/scullery. The kitchen was very cramped, and it was difficult to cook for our farm lifestyle. Two large arches separated the kitchen storage space, workspace and office space.
* The project involved the dismantling of the restrictive arches, removing a small corner single sink, as well as removing the office space.
* We fixed the existing ceiling and painted it as well as all the walls.
* We needed a table/workspace combination. This would serve as a kitchen worktop as well as a table to seat 10 people.
* Due to the dimensions of the slab, we had to make 10 bar stools to fit. The bar stools were made from timber pallets and 20mm square tube from the scrapyard.
* We made a table/slab out of concrete and used an old farm gate to secure the concrete slab.
* We obtained a second-hand built-in kitchen cupboard which included an under-counter stove.
* We had the floor resurfaced from bare concrete to a wooden finish vinyl.
* The filing cabinet from the office became our indoor herb garden for catering purposes. We turned the cabinet upside down and filled it with soil – lighting became a problem, so we hung one of our old watering cans above it, which shone a warm light over the herbs.
* Indoor lighting was a challenge, which we rectified by using a bamboo ladder supporting mason jars above our table.
* The lighting above the ‘rinse area’ was created by using graters and a colander.
* Our deep freezer and fridge were moved to our new scullery to create space in the kitchen area.
* The adjoining bedroom served as the ideal place to create a scullery and cold room for appliances.
