Our family bought a little farm in Paddock, Kwa-Zulu Natal many years ago. We always noticed Wooddell Farmhouse in the distance amongst the brambles and long grass. The old farmhouse was neglected, old and as some would have said “unsavable”… Fast forward a couple of years.. We decided it was time to fix her up and see what we could make of the house and land. Blood, sweat and tears went into her restoration and in a short amount of time with a very limited budget, she was resorted to her former glory. The kitchen, where we spend most of our time around the centre island is the heart of the home. The kitchen itself went through a rather radical transformation. The original walls and shape stayed but new flooring and tiles were laid and cupboards and features installed. The kitchen revamp was done on a very limited budget and most of the work was done with our bare (blistered) hands. We constructed, sanded and polished the concrete counter tops ourselves but called in some help on the kitchen cupboards. A local contractor made and fitted all the cupboards and the raw wood vegetable drawers were purchased locally. A electrician was called in to fit the hanging pendant lights, install the stove and sort out the electrics. A tiler was called in to help with the tiled back splash of the counter tops. My dad made the centre island and we spent many hours sanding and polishing the raw wood top and chairs. I opted for a farm-style vintage look for the kitchen so all the decor pieces have been snatched up from local second hand and antique stores. The kitchen is simple yet elegant and many laughs, smiles and happy meals are shared around it.
