So we moved into my husband’s family farmhouse. Their family had a very tough 14 years and lost almost everything after his father died. My mother-in-law stayed on the farm and tried to just keep everything afloat but she was old and alone with barely enough money to pay salaries. The house and the farm had slowly been neglected. The house hasn’t seen a tool or a lick of paint in 35 years. So when we moved to the farm, we both jumped in and started to fix all the fences and dams and every other outside thing we could, while both of us had two other jobs other than farming. Last year in November, I decided it was time to fix up the house. Every penny I could use I did, and almost everything I could do I did myself to save money. During the crazy calving season my husband could not help. But the past eight months have been amazing; I have learned to do so much with so little. I’ve learned patience and that everything can’t be done immediately – but it will get there. I’m halfway with our 14-room old farmhouse and everyday it becomes more of a home. This journey also led me to start a page called “Dames doen dit self” and now I can help other people also wanting to revamp their homes on a tiny budget. And I love it.
