This swimming pool project started in 2020 to create jobs for people during a hard economic time.
We realised that we will not be able to go on holiday in December during 2020, due to Covid-19…. which led us to decide to start building a swimming pool to enjoy during December at home.
It started by just digging a hole in the ground… just to create jobs for people who wanted to provide food on the table for their families.
The hole in the ground grew to quite a huge project…
(“toe nou nie net ‘n gat in die grond en die groen gras groei daarom nie…”)
The project was a DIY project together with 5 immensely helpful and capable men doing the digging and building. It took 3 months to do the groundworks, because we had to remove all the ground by hand and wheelbarrow, since a machine could not get access to the area on the property.
Slowly but surely, we started building the structure. Originally it was planned as a salt swimming pool, but as we went along in the process, we liked the idea of having a natural pool which can also be a WATER STORAGE TANK. We loved the idea of the natural plants, insect- and bird life. The water ph-levels are also wonderful for our children’s skins. We decided to build planters around the pool to accommodate the plants. At this time, we consulted Wetland pools to help us with the information regarding the plants and how a natural pool works.
The process took us 6 months to complete, and the whole family enjoyed a SPLASH of a time during the December summer holidays!
