My husband Roelof and I bought our house about eight years ago and it was a complete mess, but we fell in love with the natural rock inside the house.
My husband is Mr Fix-It; he can do ANYTHING and a lot of blood, sweat (and no tears) went into the renovations.
We wanted the look and feel to be young and vibey and different from the norm.
1. We opened up the doors between the living areas and kitchen to make it more open plan.
2. We replaced the tiny dingy Winblox with larger aluminium windows with no curtains.
3. We installed a bulkhead with downlighters above the rock to create a mood and focus on the beautiful rocks.
(1 and 3 were done by contractors.)
4. We painted the room.
5. Roelof made a light fitting from ornaments bought at Billabong and he built a large box and installed it as a fixture above the dining table.
6. He bought a piece of wood and made a beautiful server.
7. We bought two small tables and chairs from a restaurant that closed down. Roelof made a beautiful Saligna tabletop, which he just put on top of the two small tables, and we had the chairs reupholstered in red with black stitching.
8. We bought a batch of wooden tiles from the sales/redundant section at Builders and attached them to the wall as a signature artwork. We bought four canvases the same size as the wooden tiles and covered them with an Art Deco design (cheap cloth) which we attached to the canvas with thumb tacks.
9. We washed and sealed the rock to bring the natural beauty to the fore.
