I recently revamped my mom-in-law’s sewing room.
She is retired and spends many hours a day in her sewing room, making the most beautiful quilts. She is the most amazing and kind person, who does everything for others, so I wanted to do something special for her.
The room had the following challenges:
An ugly solar installation
Long narrow shape
Many windows and not a lot of wall space
The room had to be practical as well as beautiful, with increased storage space.
I repainted two of her chests of drawers and turned one into a mobile ironing board by attaching wheels and custom-making an ironing board top.
I bought a room divider/screen and adapted it to cover the solar installation by adding panels and painting it. The screen had to allow for ventilation and be able to be moved if needed.
After scouting many hardware and home decor shops, I decided on certain baskets, boxes and containers to accommodate the storage needs.
A new desk was required for use as a cutting table. I chose a desk with plenty of storage space. This was placed next to the sewing table, with a swivel chair in-between to make it user-friendly.
I also bought wall shelves for storage and decor purposes.
As she loves pink, we painted the room in two shades of pink. The white cupboards and shelves look amazing against this background.
The fabric that I chose for the ironing board cover was continued in soft furnishings – cushion cover, doggy bed, and basket trim.
I prepped for a couple of weekends before and did the actual installation over a weekend with the help of a good friend and fellow DIYer.
Although there wasn’t a specific budget, I tried to keep costs to a minimum without compromising on the end result.
We’re not professionals, but we feel that the finished makeover is!
