The underutilised north-facing backyard was reimagined to accommodate a creative space (for potting, art, woodwork, gardening, DIY, storage for tools, etc) and the existing utilities such as washing lines, tanks, a heat pump and garbage. The deck was built mainly from garapa, which was sourced from a pool deck that was no longer required. We also used leftover klompie bricks from another project, solar light strings previously used at a party, existing flooring and brackets from an old workbench, altered with an aluminium sheet topping and castors. A new water tank fed by the shed’s roof is used to water the pot plants and it’s supported by the boundary wall which was raised. New support beams and a pergola finish the look.
I believe that most of the project can be classed as sustainable as existing materials were reused and existing structures were adjusted and incorporated, essentially turning a wasted space into a living space with solar light and tank water as utilities.
