We recently opened a guest farm and we knew that sooner or later we would need to start living on the farm to be hands-on. We considered building a new house to live in but realised that the financial implications would be huge. After going back and forth, we decided to convert the old milk and sheep shed into our home. Because we had a very limited budget and a limited timeframe (six weeks), we did most of the project ourselves. The challenge with this shed is that the whole building is constructed out of rocks and, therefore, we cannot break any holes into the walls for doors, windows, electrical piping, plumbing etc. We had to work with what we had and make the most of it. We decided to plaster some of the walls for a more cosy effect and ended up with a minimum of 10cm-thick plaster. We love entertaining and decided to build a decent-sized stoep because we have limited space inside our house – this ended up being the most loved part of our house.
