Backwashing the swimming pool broke our hearts each time, until we jumped at the opportunity to buy two water tanks at a bargain from a neighbour. We have since diverted our backwash pipe to lead into the top of one of the tanks, then we use a garden hose to tap the precious water back into our beloved pool, after a few days. These few days allow the sediment and dust to sink to the bottom of the tank. We have two taps installed (a large ball valve that fits the Kreepy Krauly pipe, and a smaller tap for a standard garden hose) a few centimetres above the bottom of the tank, so only clean water returns to the pool. Once empty, it is easy to clean the sediment and dust without wastage.
The second tank is used to capture rainwater and that water is also used to top up the swimming pool.
