We built our home in Franschhoek about five years ago, and the small guest suite above the garage with its tiny bathroom and even tinier kitchenette had a small open terrace which turned out to be blazingly hot in summer – and was consequently never used by ourselves or guests in the way it was intended.
We started to consider how we could possibly enclose the terrace and make it part of the suite in an easy and seamless way. With the help of our original architect Denis Maas and various family and friends, we came up with a workable solution, and the results speak for themselves. Karin Cronjé and her formidable team did an outstanding job.
The wallpaper from Robin Sprong was exactly what I envisaged to make the main back wall seem ‘at a distance’. We simply removed the door between the two rooms and even retained the original curtains on the double door as a light-deterring screen between the two adjoining rooms.
We have installed three 1 000L JoJo tanks in the little courtyard below the new unit to enable us to capture and store water for garden irrigation.
