As a nature conservationist, I felt that I needed to save the water that left my shower and/or bath on a daily basis and use it in my garden. In January 2018, we installed our grey water system. All the water from our showers, basins, baths, washing machine and backwash from our pool goes into the grey water tank and from there we use it on our garden which has numerous fruit trees and other plants. We only use ecofriendly products (Ecozyme Products) in the house, especially if that water goes into our grey water tank. We also treat the water in the grey water tank with oxygen tablets to ensure the water is acceptable to the plants. Our sprinkler system also only uses the grey water, so we save a lot on our water bill from the Municipality. Even though South Africa is experiencing above average rainfall at this stage, it can change to a dry season again where we have water restrictions. I love working in my garden and it’s important to me to have water for my plants, and that made the grey water system worth the cost to me. Our plan for the future is to use the grey water for flushing our toilets as well.
