This project was born out of the necessity for water on our property. As Fourfields Hogsback is the highest residence in Hogsback and has no means of water supply from municipal sources, our only option was to collect all rainwater and have a storage facility for a large volume, as we were opening the property to guests.
This 110 000L reservoir was purchased from a local co-op and we proceeded to level an area that was previously overgrown with bamboo. We had to think long term, so a concrete base was necessary, as well as a 90% shade cloth roof which we self-engineered to be able to take the weight of snow, as all standard roof designs could not guarantee holding weight.
Because the reservoir is at a high point, water is pumped from 2 x 5000L tanks that collect from the cottage roof.
We are completely off grid with water and now have clean water for guests.
We also recycle grey water onto the garden, so no water goes to waste.
