The Vredefort Hartshuis is an eco-village in the Free State implementing low-impact solutions for sustainable living and improved livelihoods to benefit pensioners and persons with disabilities, earning only a SASSA income, including children and youths in foster care without parent and/or family support. Vredefort is known for power outages and little to no water supplied by the municipality. With the outbreak of cholera and rising deaths, also in Vredefort, plans were made for rainwater-harvesting by connecting four JoJo tanks with downpipes from the roof to catch the water from the main house during the rainy season. Currently, the Hartshuis is home to more than 100 previously destitute humans of all ages, and some 10 animals, all rescue dogs and cats. A designed system was implemented by the maintenance team of the Hartshuis (all residents) to enable us to heat water with two thick, coiled, black waterpipes on the roof, slanted zink sheets that catch rainwater in a self-made trench on the roof of the outbuildings, leading to a JoJo tank with a pump to circulate water. The final plans have now been executed: installation of the shower. The intention is to fill the JoJo tank with rainwater and take a hot shower during the day, saving on municipal water and electricity.
